Worcester, Mass. – January 18, 2025 – The Springfield College men's basketball team played a tight game against No. 22 nationally-ranked WPI on Saturday, but ultimately fell by a 64-54 final in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action in Harrington Auditorium.
WPI improved to 13-2 overall and to 5-1 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield dipped to 5-10, 2-4 with two games remaining in the first round of conference play.
Xoren Livingston (Wayland, Mass.) led Springfield with 12 points, while both
John Paulino (New Bedford, Mass.) and
Sean Harrigan (Pittsfield, Mass.) registered eight points for the Pride. Defensively,
Curtiss Blische (Barkhamsted, Conn.) notched a team-high seven rebounds. Tim Reidy powered WPI with 23 points, Aidan Callahan added 20 points and Brett Marelli posted a game-high 12 rebounds in addition to nine points for the Engineers. Neither team shot higher than 40-percent from the floor over the course of the game.
In a back-and-forth first half, the score was even six different times with the final time coming at 17-17 when Callahan drilled two free throws from the charity stripe with 4:08 to play before the break. The free throws sparked a 7-1 run before
Zachary Campbell (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove to the basket for a layup for Springfield to make it a one possession game at halftime.
Springfield was able to make it a one point game early in the second half – once following a quick 7-0 run on five points from Harrigan including a deep three pointer and a jumper by Livingston in the paint, 33-32, and once following a Harrigan trey, 38-37, just three minutes later. WPI answered with a 9-4 run to push its lead to six, 47-41, with eight minutes left in the game before the host Engineers were able to balloon its advantage to double digits on a Callahan jumper with 90 seconds left as WPI held off Springfield, 64-54.
Springfield will return home for a NEWMAC game against Emerson on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
