Cambridge, Mass. – January 25, 2025 – Graduate student
Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) registered 20 points as the Springfield College men's basketball team completed the season sweep over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival MIT, 75-63, on Saturday afternoon in Rockwell Cage.
Springfield improved to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in NEWMAC play, while MIT dipped to 8-10, 2-7. With the win today, Springfield tied the most overall wins and conference wins in a season under head coach
Michael McClendon and completed the two game regular season sweep over the Engineers for the second time in three seasons. The Pride are now 5-1 in their last six games against MIT.
Flynn shot 6-for-9 from the floor and 8-for-14 from the free throw line in addition to four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win, while
John Paulino (New Bedford, Mass.) added a season-high 13 points to go along with four boards of his own. As a team, Springfield knocked down 13 field goals in each half adding to a 49.1 shooting percentage for the game. The Pride also scored 34 points in the paint and held a 38-37 edge on the glass. Isaac Dobie led MIT with 18 points in 24 minutes off the bench.
After trailing 5-2 in the early minutes, Springfield ripped off 11 straight points for an eight point lead 5:26 into the game, 13-5, as
Curtiss Blische (Barkhamsted, Conn.) sparked the run with four points. MIT answered and eventually knotted the game at 17 and took a 20-17 lead following seven straight points from Dobie. MIT led by as many as five as time ticked down in the first half, but three layups from
Hunter Matteson (Dartmouth, Mass.) over the final 1:25 cut Springfield's deficit to just one, 32-31, at the break.
The lead changed five times over the first six minutes of the second, but eight straight points emphasized by a dunk from
Josiah Evely (Toronto, Ontario) and a layup from Paulino gave Springfield a seven point lead, 48-41, with 12:09 to play. Then just minutes later, Springfield embarked on a 9-3 run capped by a trey from
Cedric Rodriguez (Burlington, Mass.) as the Pride ballooned the lead to 12 at 60-48. Springfield maintained its double-digit lead and sank its four free throws down the stretch for the 75-63 final.
Springfield will host Wheaton next Saturday at 1:00 pm in Blake Arena looking to complete the sweep against the Lyons after a thrilling 83-81 overtime victory in Norton back in early January.
