Nashua, NH – February 1, 2025 – The No. 7 ranked Springfield College men's volleyball team defeated both SUNY Potsdam, 3-0, and Rivier University, 3-1, in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon in Muldoon Gymnasium.
Springfield, which was ranked No. 7 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III national poll and No. 7 by FrogJump Volleyball is now 5-1 on the season, while Postdam fell to 3-4 and Rivier dropped to 3-3.
Springfield eased by Potsdam by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-10 and hit .468 for the match.
Richard Eber Jr. (Hummelstown, Pa.) led Springfield with six kills in the win, while
Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.),
Carter Durivage (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and
Brennan Cutter (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded four kills apiece. Durivage also led the Pride with four aces, while
Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) registered a team-best 19 assists and four digs. Springfield held Potsdam to a -.178 hitting percentage as no one from the Bears tallied more than four kills in the match.
As a team, Springfield recorded 20 service aces – the most since February 25, 2023 when the Pride produced 25 against Emmanuel College.
Leading 3-2 in the first, Springfield scored six of the next seven points for a 9-3 lead and never looked back as the run was capped on an emphatic block by Rouleau and Mulvaney. Then later leading 10-6, Springfield ripped off a 12-2 run that featured six aces for a 22-8 lead before kills by Rouleau and
Jake DesLauriers (Eastport, N.Y.) gave Springfield the first 25-10. Nine of Springfield's 20 aces came in the first set.
Springfield hit a match-high .529 in the second set with ten kills on 17 swings and just one error as the Pride scored 13 of the first 14 points of the stanza. Over the set-opening run, Cutter led the charge with three kills. The Pride led by as many as 14 points en route to the 25-13 win.
Springfield once again built a huge lead in the third this time 11-2 following an ace from Eber Jr. The Pride hit .438 in the third (8-1-16) with six aces to complete the sweep. Leading 15-8, Springfield scored six straight and ten of the final 12 points for the 25-10 final as a swing by Rouleau capped the match for the Pride.
In the nightcap against Rivier, Springfield defeated the Raiders by scores of 25-11, 25-13, 21-25, 25-17. As a team, Springfield hit .412 with 48 kills – 18 of which came from Durivage. Eber Jr. added nine kills to his afternoon, while Rouleau and DesLauriers both chipped in with eight kills against Rivier. DesLauriers also led Springfield with six aces, while Mulvaney dished out 40 assists and Eber Jr. paced the Pride with eight digs.
Springfield hit a blistering .706 with 13 kills and just one error in set one easily taking the opening stanza, 25-11. Leading 10-6, Springfield ripped off a 10-2 run. Rouleau powered the spurt with two kills, while DesLauriers capped it with back-to-back aces. A swing by Cutter off a pass from Mulvaney ended the first.
In the second, Springfield once again recorded 13 kills and hit .550 with five kills coming from both Durivage and Rouleau. The Pride scored the first seven points of the set and went ahead 11-3 on a block by Durivage and an ace from Rouleau before Rivier cut it to just a four point edge, 11-7. Following a service error from Eber Jr., Springfield scored six straight points for a 22-11 advantage before a kill and an ace by Mulvaney secured the second, 25-13.
Rivier held Springfield to just ten kills and a .100 hitting percentage in the third – a set which saw 11 tie scores and seven lead changes. A swing by Eber Jr. gave Springfield a late 19-17 edge, but Rivier went on an 8-2 set ending run to win the third, 25-21, and force a fourth.
Springfield's offense came back in the fourth with 12 kills to go along with a .500 hitting percentage as Durivage, DesLauriers and Eber Jr. secured the fourth for the Pride, 25-17. Springfield trailed 7-4, but seven straight points that included a huge block from Cutter and Durivage gave the Pride a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Down the stretch up by four, a pair of kills from DesLauriers and a swing by Eber Jr. gave Springfield the 25-17 win in the fourth and the four set victory.
Springfield will host New Paltz on Thursday night in its home opener at 7:00 pm.
