Worcester, Mass. – February 8, 2025 – The Springfield College women's basketball team used a 16-5 run over the span of 14 minutes in the second half to defeat WPI, 46-35, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon in Harrington Auditorium.
Springfield picked up its second conference win of the week improving to 12-9 overall and 4-3 in NEWMAC play, while WPI has dropped three straight games to sit at 8-13, 1-6. Dating back to the 2016-17 season, Springfield is 9-2 against the Engineers.
Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) led Springfield with 16 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and a block for her fifth double-double of the season, while
Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) added 12 points, 12 rebounds and a steal for her seventh double double of the year and second this week.
Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.) added eight points, two assist and a rebound, while
Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.)tallied six points and six rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.
In the first, Finney drained a three point bucket off a feed from
Lindsey Laughlan (Ellington, Conn.) to knot the score at five, but WPI rattled off seven of the final nine points of the quarter for a 12-7 edge. Both teams traded buckets to open the second before a quick 9-3 run featuring five points from Finney and four from Leary gave Springfield a 20-19 edge with 3:12 to play before the break. WPI, however, hit a pair of shots from the free throw line after a trey from Shannon Reno for a 24-20 lead at halftime.
Springfield scored the first six points of the third and outscored WPI, 12-5, in the stanza thanks to balanced scoring featuring four points from Czeremcha, Hess and
Kassidy Carrano (West Haven, Conn.). Four straight free throws by Carrano gave Springfield a 32-29 lead through three - a lead it wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the game.
As a team, Springfield held WPI to just 11 points in the second half and posted 26 points of its own en route to the win. Midway through the fourth, Leary drained a three from Hess before Hess knocked down a jumper from Finney for a ten point advantage. Leary then capped the scoring for the Pride with a 5-for-7 performance at the charity stripe to account for the 46-35 final.
Springfield will host Salve Regina University on Wednesday at 5:00 pm in Blake Arena.
