Willimantic, Conn. – March 25, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team defeated Eastern Connecticut State University by scores of 16-7 and 8-2 in a non-conference twinbill on Tuesday afternoon on the road.
Springfield, which improved to 9-5 on the season, swept Eastern Connecticut State at Clyde Washburne field for the first time since May 3, 2001. The Warriors dropped to 3-9 after today's doubleheader.
Springfield's offense combined for 24 runs in the two games powered by a pair of home runs from
Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.). The graduate student went 3-for-7 at the plate with five RBI, while
Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) went 5-for-8 with three doubles, four RBI and five runs for the Pride.
Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) also had a strong day at the plate with a 4-for-6 effort to go along with a double, three runs, three RBI and two walks.
Game One: Springfield 16, EastConn 7
The Warriors struck first with a solo run in the bottom of the first before Springfield put together ten runs on eight hits in the top of the second. With the bases loaded,
Marissa Seyfert (Farmingdale, N.Y.) drove in two with a single to the gap. DeRosa added an RBI single to left before
Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.)roped a two-run double to right center to make it 5-1. Gendron then stepped to the plate and launched her second round-tripper of the season for a 7-1 advantage.
After Eastern Connecticut made a pitching change, two walks and a single loaded the bases for Katsetos, who promptly unloaded them with a three-run double to center to make it 10-1. Gendron then made it 12-1 in the top of the third with her second homer in as many innings after DeRosa reached on a single through the left side.
The hosts put together two runs in the third and the fourth to cut the deficit to 12-5, but Springfield then exploded for four more runs in the top of the seventh highlighted by an RBI knock from
Katie Manzone (Wareham, Mass.) to account for the 16-7 final.
This is the third time this season that Springfield has produced 10+ runs in a single game and is the most runs Springfield has scored since April 7, 2023 when the Pride defeated Clark University, 18-1.
DeRosa improved to 4-3 in the circle for the Pride with her fourth complete game of the year.
Game Two: Springfield 8, EastConn 2
After three scoreless innings from both sides, an RBI infield single from
Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) put Springfield ahead 1-0 in the top of the fourth. The hosts took its first lead of the day with a two spot in the bottom of the frame, but from that point on Springfield scored six unanswered runs to secure the sweep.
In the top of the fifth with runners on second and third, DeRosa drove in Seyfert and Katsetos for a 3-2 edge before Gendron drove in DeRosa and
Emilia Santiago (West Hartford, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-2.
An RBI groundout and an error added two runs for Springfield in the sixth before an infield pinch-hit single from
Lyndsay Donston (South Windsor, Conn.) accounted for the 8-2 final.
Julia Rimshnick (Staten Island, N.Y.) improved her record to 4-1 in the circle for Springfield with seven punchouts in the nightcap.
