Springfield, Mass. – March 8, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team fell twice to No. 12 nationally-ranked Williams College in the team's season opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Potter Field.
The Ephs edged the Pride, 1-0, in game one before rolling to an 11-0 victory in the nightcap. Williams, which reached the NCAA Super Regional round a season ago begins its campaign at 2-0, while Springfield starts off at 0-2.
Game One:
Sadie Leonard and
Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) both pitched gems for their respective teams as the game was scoreless through five. Leonard (1-0) scattered four hits and struck out 13 for the Ephs, while DeRosa (0-1) allowed just one run, four hits and struck out four in her 2025 debut.
After five scoreless innings and with two outs in the top of the sixth, Katie Blanch tripled to right and came around to score the game's lone run on an RBI single to center by Kaia Glickman.
Springfield loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth on singles by
Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.),
Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) and a walk by
Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.), but Leonard got out of the jam. Then once again loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with singles by DeRosa and Pecchia and another walk by Ponticello, but Springfield wasn't able to muster a run. Leonard got Springfield out 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh for the 1-0 final.
Pecchia went 2-for-3 in the opener for Springfield.
Game Two:
Williams scored six times in the top of the first inning highlighted by RBI singles by Sydney Fleming and Vicky Trujillo Balderas. Fleming ended game two 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while the top two hitters for Williams in Balderas and Kayla Chang combined to go 4-for-6 with two RBI, four runs scored and two walks.
The Ephs added three runs in the fourth in a two-run triple by Fleming and an RBI groundout by Blanch before an RBI triple in the fifth paired with an error by Springfield made it 11-0.
Springfield's lone hit of game two came from
Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.) as she collected her first collegiate knock.
Abby Robinson (East Lyme, Conn.) and
Julia Rimshnick (Staten Island, N.Y.) both made their collegiate debuts in the circle for the Pride.
Blanch (1-0) pitched a complete game for the Ephs as she struck out six and allowed the solo hit by Eckles.
Springfield will host the University of Hartford tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at noon on Potter Field.
