McCauliffe Spins No Hitter as Softball Takes Two on the Road at Amherst

Amherst, Mass. – April 16, 2025 – Junior Lily McCauliffe (Greenwich, Conn.) tossed an eight inning no-hitter to secure a two game non-conference sweep for the Springfield College softball team at Amherst College this afternoon. Springfield won game one, 12-3, in six innings before McCauliffe's gem secured a 1-0 victory in the nightcap for the Pride.

McCauliffe's no-hitter today was the sixth for Springfield since 2012 and first since Amelia DeRosa's (Miller Place, N.Y.) perfect game against Westfield State on April 19, 2023. The Mammoths were also held hitless for the first time since April 4, 2014 when Middlebury completed the feat in in game one of the NESCAC doubleheader at Amherst.

Springfield, which has now won five straight games on the road at Amherst, improved to 17-9, while the Mammoths fell to 12-13.

Game One: Springfield 12, Amherst 3

The score was even at one apiece until Springfield exploded for seven runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to earn the run rule win. At the top of the lineup, DeRosa went 3-for-5 with two runs, Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI, Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run and Katie Manzone (Wareham, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Additionally, Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) and Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) both drove in two runs in the win.

With one out in the fifth, DeRosa roped a triple to center before her and Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.)broke the 1-1 tie on a two run double to the gap by Pecchia. Gendron then drove in pinch runner Maddie Tse (Glenville, N.Y.) to make it 4-1. After a pitching change, an error by Amherst allowed two additional runs to score before a two run single up the middle by Katsetos put the game out of reach at 8-1.

Amherst answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, but an RBI double by Manzone, a two run double by Puskas and another error made it 12-3 in the top of the sixth. DeRosa returned to the circle and set Amherst down 1-2-3 to secure the game one victory.

Game Two: Springfield 1, Amherst 0

DeRosa continued her stellar day with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate in the nightcap, while Haley Ball (Westbrook, Maine) recorded a pair of hits as the duo combined for six of Springfield's eight hits.

It was a pitchers duel between McCauliffe and Abby Moravek as the game went scoreless into the top of the eighth. McCauliffe struck out four, while Moravek tallied ten punchouts and neither team saw a runner reach third until the fifth.

After seven scoreless frames, Springfield ran into its first out of the eighth at the plate, but a double by Gendron put runners on second and third for the Pride. With two outs, Ball lined the ball to second where it was misplayed allowing Lyndsay Donston (South Windsor, Conn.) to score the go ahead run.

McCauliffe returned to the circle and struck out the final two batters of the game to secure the 1-0 win and the no-hitter.

Springfield will next travel to Coast Guard for a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
