SALEM BOUND! No. 4 Men's Volleyball Outlasts No. 6 Carthage to Punch Ticket to National Semifinals

Kenosha, Wis. – April 19, 2025 – The fourth-ranked Springfield College men's volleyball team earned a hard fought five set win over sixth-ranked Carthage College in the 2025 NCAA National Quarterfinals on Saturday evening in Tarble Arena. Springfield won by scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 15-8.

With the win, Springfield improved to 24-4 and will advance to the NCAA National Semifinals in Salem, Virginia on Friday, April 25 at 7:30 pm. Springfield, which will appear in its first national semifinal match since 2022 and for the tenth time in program history, will take on seventh-ranked Cal Lutheran in Salem. Carthage sees its season come to a close at 23-4.

Springfield produced 66 kills tonight as a team, which is the ninth most ever for a five set match in the NCAA Tournament. Carter Durivage (East Greenbush, N.Y.) registered 23 of the team's 66 kills and hit .514 on the night. Sam Levinson (LaGrange, Ill.) hit .462 and added 14 kills, three aces and seven digs, while Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.)Brennan Cutter (Trumbull, Conn.) and Jake DesLauriers (Eastport, N.Y.) all registered nine kills apiece. Cutter added six blocks to his stat line, while Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.)registered 55 assists, two aces and ten digs.

Springfield built a three point edge late in the opening set following back-to-back aces from Mulvaney forcing Carthage to burn a timeout. A swing by Durivage made it 20-17, but the Firebirds answered with a 5-1 run to take a 22-21 lead. Despite a kill from Rouleau to even the score at 22, two Springfield service errors and an ace by Owen Hendricks secured the first set for Carthage, 25-22. In the first, Carthage hit .500 with 14 kills, while Springfield hit .375 with ten kills.

Leading by just one at 13-12 midway through the second, Springfield ripped off five straight points pushing its edge to six at 18-12. The run featured two kills from Levinson, one kill from Durivage and a pair of Carthage errors. Then after trading points down the stretch, three kills from Durivage terminated the set 25-21 in favor of the Pride tying the match at one apiece. Springfield produced a match-high 17 kills in the second – seven of which came from 14 swings by Durivage.

Springfield led 8-5 in the third before embarking on a 9-2 run pushing its lead to ten at 17-7. The spurt was ignited on two kills from both Cutter and Durivage before four straight attack errors by Carthage made it 16-7. DesLauriers terminated the run on a ball fed to him off the hands of Mulvaney. Carthage got as close as six at 24-18, but Levinson powered the ball off the hands of the Firebirds securing the set 25-18. Springfield made just one error in the third (14-1-21) and hit at a .619 clip compared to a match-high five errors by Carthage (11-5-31 - .194).

Carthage was able to force a decisive fifth set by winning the fourth 25-19 as the Firebirds led from start to finish as Carthage hit a match-best .481 with 15 kills in the set. Carthage used a 4-0 run to push its lead to 11-6 and despite cutting its deficit to just three at 15-12 following a kill from DesLauriers, the Firebirds responded and ultimately built its lead back to as many as six.

Playing in its second five set match in as many nights, Springfield was in complete control racing out to a 6-1 lead in the decisive set. A kill from Durivage began the fifth before a Carthage error gave Springfield the lead for good. The run followed with a kill and an ace from Durivage as well as kills from DesLauriers and Levinson. Up three at 9-6 late in the match, Rouleau ignited the match ending run that saw a pair of huge blocks in the middle before a swing by Cutter sealed Springfield's spot in the final four.
