Women's Lacrosse Downs Wheaton, 18-1, in NEWMAC Quarterfinals

Springfield, Mass. – April 26, 2025 – The third-seeded Springfield College women's lacrosse team earned an 18-1 win over sixth-seeded Wheaton College in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

Springfield, now 14-3 on the season, will travel to second-seeded MIT for a semifinal contest on Wednesday, April 30 at a time to be determined later this weekend. Wheaton sees its season end with a record of 8-9.

Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) and Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) led Springfield's offense with four goals apiece, while Lauren Ronai (Orange, Conn.) registered four points on two goals and two assists and Isabella Mazzi (Niantic, Conn.) notched two goals and one assist for three points this afternoon. Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Kristyn Vasselin (Hudson, Mass.) also chipped in with two strikes today for the Pride. In a balanced effort, Hannah Hibbert (Center Harbor, N.H.) recorded a team-best four draw controls, while Lindsay Vogt (Westwood, N.J.) posted two caused turnovers and Kate Laico (East Meadow, N.Y.) made six saves and scooped up four ground balls.

With her four goals this afternoon, Johnson reached 100 goals for her collegiate career.

As a team, Springfield held a 34-14 differential in shots, a 27-14 margin in ground balls and a 13-8 edge in draw controls. Both teams went 1-for-2 on free position shots.

Springfield scored the first 16 goals of the contest before Wheaton broke the shutout late in the fourth quarter en route to the 18-1 final. Lalancette registered two of Springfield's first three goals of the game before all four of Johnson's strikes came in a span of 11 minutes ending the first quarter with the Pride ahead 8-0.

Mazzi opened the scoring in the second before Andresen finished a pass from Claire Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) to make it 10-0 and push the game into running clock. Vasselin ended with half with back-to-back unassisted strikes as the Pride took a 12-0 lead into the break. 

Andresen, Liz Neri (Farmington, Conn.) and Mazzi all scored for Springfield in the third before Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.), Andresen and Ronai capped the barrage in fourth quarter. 

Springfield and MIT will meet for the second consecutive season in the NEWMAC semifinals on Wednesday.
