No. 2 Men's Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision at Tenth-Ranked Vassar

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – April 5, 2025 – The Springfield College men's volleyball team suffered just its second loss to a Division III opponent this year as tenth-ranked Vassar College swept the Pride on Saturday afternoon by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-23.

Vassar, which was ranked tenth in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Division III national poll and ninth in the NCAA Power Index (NPI), improved to 20-5 overall, while Springfield, which was ranked second by the AVCA and third in the NPI, fell to 22-3 as the Brewers snapped the Pride's 14 match winning streak.

Springfield was guided by Carter Durivage (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and Jake DesLauriers (Eastport, N.Y.), who both his .364 on the day with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Sam Levinson (LaGrange, Ill.) added nine kills and a team-best six digs to his stat line as well. Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) dished out 31 assists for the Pride. Walter Birnbaum led Vassar with 13 kills and hit .462 for the hosts. Springfield has now lost its last three matchups in Poughkeepsie dating back to the 2023 season.

Springfield trailed 15-10 in the first before the Pride ripped off six straight points on two aces from DesLauriers as well as kills from Levinson, Mulvaney and Durivage for a 16-15 edge. Vassar ultimately tied the score at 20-20 following an error from Springfield, a kill from Billy Fan and an ace from Payne Lounsbery sparking a 6-2 set-ending run as the Brewers took the first 25-22.

Springfield once again trailed in the second – this time 17-10. A swing from Durivage cut Vassar's run and seven straight points from the Pride tied the score at 17-17. The spurt from Springfield featured two kills and back-to-back aces from Durivage. Vassar led 21-20 following a swing from Levinson and finished the second with four straight points on two Springfield errors and back-to-back kills by Walter Birnbaum.

Springfield held a 19-13 lead late in the third set, but a kill from Armaan Desai ignited an 8-2 run for Vassar as the hosts regained a 22-21 edge. DesLauriers tied the score at 22-22 before a kill from Billy Fan, an ace from Birnbaum and a Springfield error secured the set 25-23 and the sweep for Vassar.

Springfield will return home for a match against Division I Merrimack on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm.
