Softball Clipped By UMass Boston In NCAA Regional Championship Elimination Game

Ithaca, NY – May 16, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team saw its 2025 season come to a close this afternoon on day two of the NCAA Division III regional championship as UMass Boston defeated the Pride, 4-2, at Kostrinsky Field on the campus of Ithaca College.

UMass Boston improved to 33-12-1 and will take on No. 21 Ithaca College in another elimination game at 5:00 pm this afternoon, while Springfield ends its 2025 campaign at 30-15. Springfield reached 30 wins for the sixth time in Division III program history as previously reaching the mark in 2000 (30), 2001 (41), 2003 (33), 2017 (32) and 2023 (35).

For her efforts over the weekend, Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) was named to the Ithaca Regional All-Tournament Team.

UMass Boston struck for the first run of the game with a two out RBI triple in the top of the second by Mary Matthew as she plated Lauren Miner, who reached on a one out single to right center. Matthew came to the plate with runners on second and third in the fourth and drove in two more runs on a single up the middle making it 3-0 midway through the contest.

Bri Melchionda was terrific in the circle for the Beacons holding Springfield to just two hits through four innings before Jacqueline Cherry pitched the fifth and part of the sixth inning before Melchionda returned. Springfield rallied for two runs off of Cherry in the sixth as the Pride loaded the bases before Katsetos drove in the first run of the game on an RBI single to left center.

An RBI groundout by Katie Manzone (Wareham, Mass.) cut Springfield's deficit to just one, 3-2, when Melchionda got out of the jam. UMass Boston responded with an insurance run in the top of the seventh and then Melchionda set Springfield down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame for the 4-2 final.

Springfield was able to produce five hits in the game against the Beacons – two of which came from Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.)Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.), Katsetos and Manzone accounted for the remaining three hits for the Pride.

This was the first meeting between Springfield and UMass Boston since the 2017 NCAA Division III regional championship where the Beacons topped the Pride, 3-1, on Potter Field in an elimination game.
