Springfield, Mass. – May 3, 2025 – The top-seeded Springfield College men's lacrosse team was upended by second-seeded Babson College, 12-10, in the championship game of the 2025 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Babson improved to 13-5 and earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, while Springfield sees its season come to an end at 10-7. Springfield head coach
Keith Bugbee ends his 42 seasons on the sidelines with the Pride with an overall record of 432-237 (.646 winning percentage) and saw his programs win ten or more games 30 times.
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) powered the Springfield offense with three goals and three assists for six points, while
Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) registered a hat trick on the day.
Riley Burgmyer (Somers, Conn.),
Bryan Stensrud (LaGrangeville, N.Y.),
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) and
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) all tallied single goals today for the Pride. On the defensive side of the ball,
Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) scooped up eight ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers, while
Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) added six ground balls as well.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.)went 13-of-23 at the face-off dot.
As a team, Babson out shot Springfield, 52-39 and held a 35-31 edge in ground balls. Springfield went 20-for-22 on the clear, scored once on the power play and won a total of 14 face offs. In net,
Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) made 13 saves for Springfield, while Alex Fascilla stopped the ball 11 times for the Beavers.
Webb scored the game's first goal at the 11:11 mark before Babson took a 2-1 edge through 15 minutes of play on back-to-back goals from Tournament Most Outstanding Player Sam Sisk and Seamus Rooney. Webb then began the scoring in the second tying the board at two apiece before Degnan and Burgmyer gave Springfield a 5-3 lead at the break. Stensrud scored on the man-advantage early in the third to make it 6-3 before Babson began its furious comeback.
Springfield held a three goals advantage at 7-4 following a strike from Degnan late in the third before Babson tallied eight straight goals over a span of the next 12 minutes as the run ended with a tally from Camden Matthews on the man-advantage with 9:12 to play in the fourth. Springfield attempted to rally to force overtime, and saw Webb, Tierney and Nocito all score over the final 8:41, but it wasn't enough as Babson came out on top, 12-10.
