Newport, RI – May 3, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team split its final regular season doubleheader of the year at Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon. The host Seahawks won the opener 2-1 before Springfield won the nightcap 4-2.
Springfield, now 29-11 overall and 14-6 in NEWMAC play, secured the third seed in next week's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament. The Pride will travel to second-seeded Babson College for the opening rounds with Springfield awaiting either Coast Guard or Emerson in the first game of the afternoon slated for 2:30 pm.
Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI for Springfield, while
Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) went 4-for-7 with a double and two runs and
Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with a run and two walks.
Game One: Salve Regina 2, Springfield 1
With runners on the corners and two outs, Jacey Cosciello drew a throw to second and then stole home for the 1-0 lead for Salve Regina. Seahawks starter Alex Kelly held the Pride to just two hits over the first 4.2 innings before DeRosa lined a double to gap and then scored the game tying run on an RBI single to right center by
Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.).
Salve Regina quickly answered in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead for good as after an infield single by Morganti Bello, who moved to second on a sac bunt, scored the winning run on an RBI double down the left field line by Emily Moskal.
Springfield had the tying run on second in the top of the seventh, but Kelly retired the side with back-to-back pop outs to secure the 2-1 final in favor of the hosts.
Game Two: Springfield 4, Salve Regina 2
Springfield bounced back to earn the split in the nightcap as RBI singles by
Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) and Katsetos gave the Pride an early 2-0 lead. Salve Regina tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second, but Springfield quickly responded with two more runs of its own on RBI singles by
Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) and Katsetos.
From that point on with Springfield ahead 4-2 through two and a half innings, starter
Lily McCauliffe (Greenwich, N.Y.) allowed just three total hits and then used back-to-back strikeouts in the seventh to secure the split for the Pride.
