Cambridge, Mass. – May 8, 2025 – The third-seeded Springfield College softball team saw its run in the 2025 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament come to an end on Thursday afternoon following a 10-8 loss to fourth-seeded WPI at MIT's Briggs Field.
WPI improved to 25-15, but later saw its season end following a 5-2 loss to fifth-seeded Wheaton College in this afternoon's third elimination game. Springfield's record dropped to 30-13, but came into today ranked 39th nationally in the NCAA Power Index (NPI) will now have to wait until Monday to hear if the program received an at-large berth to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
In today's back and forth slugfest, Springfield produced 13 hits and eight runs as
Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI, while
Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.) went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Both
Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) and
Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y) tallied two hits and two RBI apiece for the Pride.
WPI registered single runs in the top of the first and the top of the second on just one hit as the Engineers took advantage of a pair of Springfield errors for the early lead. Springfield knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the first as singles by Eckles,
Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and Gendron loaded the bases for Ponticello, who drilled the game-tying hit into center.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, Katsetos roped a two-run single into left center plating Pecchia and Ponticello for a 3-2 lead before
Marissa Seyfert (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made it 4-2 on an RBI single of her own.
WPI responded as Emma Nagy belted a one out round tripper over the fence in center for the Engineers in the top of the fourth before retaking a 6-4 edge following a pair of RBI singles from Virginia McKinney and Lily Latour. In the back and forth game no lead was safe as in the bottom of the very next inning Springfield regained a 7-6 lead following Gendron's three-run blast that scored Eckles and Pecchia after back-to-back walks.
A pitching change for Springfield in the top of the fifth ultimately led to WPI taking a 10-7 as Nagy drove in the game-tying run before a wild pitch and RBI knocks from Megan Sherwood and Latour accounted for the 10-8 final.
Springfield stranded runners on base in each of the final three innings and despite scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh, the Pride left the tying run on second base following a line out by
Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) ending the contest with WPI advancing.
In games decided by one or two runs this season, Springfield was 10-7.
