Platteville, Wis. - September 20, 2025 - A 28-point second quarter was enough for No. 10/11 UW-Platteville to defeat the Springfield College football team, 28-12, in a non-conference battle on Saturday afternoon at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
Platteville remained undefeated at 3-0, while Springfield fell to 1-2 with conference play looming next weekend.
Springfield's offense was powered by
TJ Welch (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown, while defensively
Tyler Pohlman (St. James, N.Y.) recorded five tackles and an interception. Platteville quarterback Nathan Uselding went 10-for-13 with 104 yards and a touchdown, while running back Zackary Bothun rushed for 129 yards and three scores. Harrison Meyer registered a game-high nine tackles including one for a loss for the hosts.
Statistically, Springfield held the ball for nearly 40 minutes of the game and outproduced Platteville in total offense 338-317, but the hosts averaged 7.7 yards per play, while Springfield was only able to muster 4.4 yards per play. The Pride also went 11-for-21 on third down conversions, 2-for-3 on fourth down conversions and scored all three times they reached the red zone.
After a scoreless first quarter, Bothyn found the end zone for Platteville early in the second to give the hosts a 7-0 lead capping off a seven play, 85-yard drive. On the ensuing drive, Welch rushed 18 yards for a first down before stalling on the next set of downs setting up another scoring drive for the Pioneers. The hosts converted on fourth and five at the Springfield 35 yard line with a 16 yard completion to Carter Olsen before ultimately scoring four plays later to make it 14-0.
Unfortunately on the kick off,
Avian Evans (West Haven, Conn.) fumbled the football allowing Platteville to take over at the 15-yard line and score again to make it 21-0 after just two additional plays. A three and out for Springfield set up one final touchdown drive for Platteville - this time a 13 yard rush by Bothun making the score 28-0 at the break.
Springfield received the ball to open the third and began with a 28-yard rushing play by
James Green. After eventually stalling out at the Platteville 22-yard line,
Ian Wernik (Plymouth, Mass.) drilled a 39-yard field goal for Springfield's first points of the game. On the next drive, Pohlman intercepted a pass from Jake Sullivan setting up a lengthy drive for the visitors. Springfield strung together 14 plays and held the ball for over eight minutes ending with a two-yard rush by Welch into the end zone. After the missed PAT, Springfield still trailed 28-9.
Springfield forced another Platteville punt early in the fourth and answered with yet another long drive - this time 16 plays for 70 yards that lasted almost eight minutes. Wernik was called upon and yet again drilled a 26-yard field goal.
A three and out by the Pioneers gave Springfield the ball back with 3:11 to play and the score at 28-12. Springfield put together 12 plays, but the Pride ran out of time ultimately falling by the aforementioned score.
Springfield will open NEWMAC play next Saturday with a trip to MIT for kickoff at noon in Cambridge.
