Northampton, Mass. – September 30, 2025 – The Springfield College women's volleyball team defeated Smith College in straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-20 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday evening in Ainsworth Gymnasium.
Springfield, now winners of ten straight, improved to 13-2 overall and to 3-0 in NEWMAC play, while Smith fell to 10-7, 1-2. Springfield has won 23 regular season matchups against Smith College.
Another balanced effort from Springfield's offense saw
Jodi Saelua (Mililani, Hawaii) register a team-best eight kills, while
Emily Keaveney (Massapequa Park, N.Y.),
Ahunna James (Plainville, Mass.) and
Aubrey Hughes (Liberty Hill, Texas) all notched seven kills in the sweep. Of the four aforementioned student-athletes, Hughes had the best hitting percentage at .583 (7 kills – 0 errors – 12 swings). James also produced a team-best four blocks tonight.
Olivia Nealy (Athens, Ga.) notched 15 digs, Keaveney registered 14 digs
and Tori Colosimo (Fairport, N.Y.) tallied three kills, 27 assists, three aces, two blocks and six digs to fill the stat sheet.
After a back and forth first half of the opening set, a kill by Keaveney ignited a 5-1 run for the Pride extending the lead to 18-13. Then down the stretch and leading 19-16, Springfield took advantage of a trio of Smith errors and saw Colosimo and Hughes cap the set with kills as the Pride won the first 25-19.
Springfield hit a match-best .353 and produced 15 kills on 34 swings in the middle set. Smith held an 11-10 edge before the Pride ripped off seven of the next eight points to go ahead 17-12. The run began with a kill from Colosimo and also featured two kills from Keaveney. Needing just two points to take the set, Saelua punched the ball through the middle before
Vanessa Gude (Eldersburg, Md.) registered an ace to win it 25-18.
Springfield was ahead 18-15 in the third before three straight errors by Smith, an ace by Colosimo and a block by Hughes put the Pride within two points of the sweep. The hosts were able to get five points back to make it 24-20, but one final error by Smith and a kill by James secured the third 25-20 and the third straight conference win for Springfield.
Springfield will travel to Emerson College for a tri-match on Saturday beginning at 11:00 am. The Pride will take on NEWMAC rival Emerson in the first match of the day before playing Southern Maine at 1:30 pm in Boston.
