Men's Basketball Hands Salve Regina First NEWMAC Loss in 78-65 Final From Blake Arena

Springfield, Mass. – January 15, 2026 – In front of a crowd of over 500 local Springfield elementary school students, the Springfield College men's basketball team defeated Salve Regina University, 78-65, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Thursday afternoon.

Springfield improved to 5-10 overall and to 3-3 in NEWMAC play, while Salve Regina dropped its first league game of the year and sits at 11-3, 4-1. 

Josiah Evely (Toronto, Ontario) powered Springfield with 18 points, four rebounds, three steals, two assists and a bloc, while Zachary Campbell (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched 16 points and five rebounds. Cedric Rodriguez (Burlington, Mass.) tallied ten points and team-best eight boards for the Pride. All 11 student-athletes for Springfield registered at least one rebound and nine of 11 notched at least two points. Jack Margoupis led Salve Regina 22 points and seven rebounds, while Pat Spenard posted a 20 point, 16 rebound double double for the Seahawks.

A jumper by Rodriguez with 11:45 left in the first half gave Springfield its first lead of the game at 13-12. Then down 17-14 four minutes later, a trey by Sean Harrigan (Pittsfield, Mass.) tied the score at 17 and ignited a 9-0 run for the Pride extending the lead to six at 23-17. The two teams traded points over the final four minutes of the first before a three by Robinson Rodriguez (Nashua, N.H.) and a tip-in by C. Rodriguez made it a 35-28 game at the break.

Salve Regina opened the second with an 8-2 run to pull the visitors with one at 37-36. The two sides had the score even six times with the final time coming at 51 following a pair of free throws by Spenard with 8:45 remaining in regulation. A layup by Spenard made it 54-51, but a 9-2 run by the Pride highlighted by a trey from Campbell made it 60-54. Campbell finished an and one play, C. Rodriguez knocked down a layup in the paint and Campbell buried a three from the corner to put the game out of reach, 68-58.

Evely finished an and one and Ajay Lopes (Wareham, Mass.) buried four shots from the charity stripe to account for the 78-65 final.

Springfield will travel to Clark University on Tuesday for a NEWMAC tilt at 7pm.
