Men's Basketball Sees Season End in NEWMAC Quarterfinal in Road Loss to Wheaton

Norton, Mass. – February 25, 2026 – Making its second trip to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament in as many years, fifth-seeded Springfield College fell to fourth-seeded Wheaton College, 60-52, in the quarterfinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament on Wednesday night in Emerson Gymnasium.

Wheaton improved to 16-10 and will advance to Friday's NEWMAC Semifinal at top-seeded WPI, while Springfield sees its season come to an end at 10-16.

Zachary Campbell (Philadelphia, Pa.) led Springfield with 14 points to go along with a team-best eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks, while Cedric Rodriguez (Burlington, Mass.) added 11 points and five boards. Meanwhile, Dimetri Iafrate led all scorers with 25 points to go along with ten rebounds in all 40 minutes on the court for Wheaton. Eoin Morrissey added eight points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

Springfield scored 16 of the game's first 19 points over the opening six minutes of the contest as an and-one play by Rodriguez capped the game-opening run. Tristan Herry buried a three for Wheaton to end the run for the Pride, but Rodriguez immediately answered with a trey of his own to go back ahead by 13 at 19-6. Wheaton was able to pull within eight at 27-19 about seven minutes later, but Springfield ballooned its advantage back to 13 at 37-24 following a layup by Hunter Matteson (Dartmouth, Mass.) heading into halftime.

Wheaton tallied the first 12 points of the second half as a three pointer by cut the Lyons deficit to just one at 37-36. Matteson cut the run two minutes later with a free throw before Iafrate gave Wheaton its first lead of the game on a shot from deep range. Springfield was able to eventuate tie the score at 47 after Campbell notched a shot from three before a layup by Josiah Evely (Toronto, Ontario) put Springfield in the lead 50-49 with 4:14 left in regulation. Wheaton then held Springfield scoreless for nearly the rest of the game and outscored the Pride 11-2 to secure the quarterfinal win.
