Women's Lacrosse Drops 11-10 Overtime Decision to Skidmore in Season Opener

Springfield, Mass. – February 26, 2026 – The Springfield College women's lacrosse team fell to Skidmore College, 11-10, in overtime on Thursday night in the team's 2026 season opener on Stagg Field.

Skidmore improved to 2-0, while Springfield dropped to 0-1 to start the year.

Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) led Springfield's offense with three goals and one assist for four points to go along with four draw controls, two caused turnovers and a ground ball as she recorded her 100th career point this evening, while Kristyn Vasselin (Hudson, Mass.) also totaled three goals to complete her first career hat trick. Julia Cafasso totaled three goals and one assist to lead Skidmore.

In net, Tatum Walsh made 12 stops for Skidmore, while Lindsay Hillemeir (Unionville, Conn.) produced six saves for Springfield.

Springfield took a quick 2-1 lead after Vasselin and Claire Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) recorded unassisted goals less than 30 seconds apart midway through the first. Skidmore answered as Cafasso tied the score heading into the second before she found Phoebe Ross on the man-advantage to take a 3-2 edge. Lalancette tallied the equalizer on the man-advantage before Vasselin gave Springfield a 4-3 edge heading into halftime.

The two sides traded goals until Olivia Zalinsky (Bethany, Conn.) and Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.)recorded strikes leaving the Pride ahead 7-5 with 2:39 left in the third. Skidmore then notched four straight goals including two on the man-advantage to take a two goal lead of its own early in the fourth.

Vasselin ended the run and completed her hat trick with 3:58 to play in regulation before back-to-back unassisted goals from Lalancette put Springfield ahead 10-9. Piper Morgan found the equalizer for Skidmore with under a minute to play and Springfield had a look at net as Payton Imhof (Bay Shore, N.Y.) ripped a shot at Walsh with 10 seconds left, but Walsh made the save to send the game into overtime.

Johnson won the draw in overtime and Lalancette fired the first shot that sailed just wide of the cage allowing Skidmore to respond with a game winning attempt. The Thoroughbreds cleared the ball before Grace Debenedictis potted the game winner just 1:15 into the overtime session.

Springfield held the edge in shots (31-29), ground balls (14-10) and draw controls (15-8) and went 12-for-16 in transition. Skidmore went 16-for-22 on the clear and scored twice on free position shots – both of which came in the third quarter.

Springfield will host Western New England University on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm on Stagg Field.
