Norton, Mass. - March 28, 2026 - The Springfield College men's tennis team defeated Wheaton in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener, 4-3.
Springfield improves to 5-5 overall and opens up conference play at 1-0 while Wheaton drops to 6-3, 0-1.
After dropping No. 1 doubles, the Pride won out as Akito Shimamura (Hirono, Japan) and Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) at No. 2 doubles and Liam Huppke (Markham, Canada) and Angelo Guzman (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) at No. 3 went on to defeat both of their opponents 6-4.
Both the Pride and the Lyons won three singles matches each. Guzman got the win at No. 2 singles in three sets, defeating Pablo Munoz by scores of 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 as Thongbooncharoen and Huppke both won their matches in straight sets at the bottom of the lineup. Thongbooncharoen defeated Jake Murray at No. 5 by scores of 6-4 while Huppke got the win at No. 6, beating Calvin Van Dyke by scores of 7-5, 6-0.
The Pride will host Clark on Saturday for an 11:00 am match on the Appleton Tennis Courts.
