Men's Lacrosse Storms Back For 11-10 Double OT NEWMAC Win Over MIT

Springfield, Mass. – March 29, 2026 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team fought back from 9-3 deficit midway through the third and ultimately defeated MIT, 11-10, in double overtime in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tilt on Sunday afternoon on Stagg Field.

Springfield, which has now won four straight contests against the Engineers picked up its second league win of the spring and now sits at 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC, while MIT dropped to 5-5, 2-1.

As a team, Springfield out shot MIT, 52-43, and went 25-for-27 on the clear, while the Engineers held the edge in ground balls, 31-25, and scored three times on the man-advantage. 

Individually, Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.)Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.)Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) and Nick Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) all notched two goals. Dominic Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) and Angus Oliveira (Little Compton, R.I.) combined for 11 ground balls and four caused turnovers with Oliveira, Reece Whitney (Chester, Conn.) and Dylan Brown (Bristol, Conn.) all causing a trio of turnovers. In net, Joseph Grenier (Cheshire, Conn.) made 12 saves for the Pride including one in double overtime. Zach Bleil led MIT with four goals, while Garrett Campagna totaled five points on a goal and four assists.

MIT led 4-2 after one and took a 7-3 lead into the halftime break. The Engineers extended their lead to six at 10-4 with less than five minutes remaining in the third before Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) connected with Bryan Stensrud (LaGrangeville, N.Y.), which ignited a string of seven straight goals ultimately leading to Springfield's 11-10 double overtime win.

Webb tallied a goal on the man-advantage off a pass from Soldo before Soldo struck for an unassisted goal to cap the scoring the in third with the Pride still trailing 10-7. Springfield had three open looks at net before MIT finally picked up the ball and drove down the field in transition. Oliveira made a play and forced an MIT turnover giving possession back to the Pride before Scanlon potted a goal with 5:02 left in regulation pulling Springfield within two.

Springfield then found two goals in a span of less than 30-seconds with under a minute left on the clock to force overtime. Whitney forced an MIT turnover and Springfield took over with 52-seconds left as Chuck Weitzel (Newton, Mass.) scooped up the ball in transition. After a shot that sailed wide, Scanlon buried his second goal of the quarter making it 10-9.

MIT won the ensuing face off but Whitney caused another turnover giving the ball back to the Pride and Logan Ruby (Katonah, N.Y.). Down in the offensive zone with six seconds left in the game, Domenic Savastano passed the ball to Nick Savastano who tied the score at ten sending the game into overtime.

Neither team was able to get a good look in the first overtime session, but MIT won the face off in the second overtime. Bleil fired a shot wide and Grenier made a save off a shot by Campagna giving the Pride a chance to win it.

Off the clear, Sal Posillico (Farmingdale, N.Y.) went 1-on-1 with the keeper and drilled the game winning goal over the shoulders of Collin Lung to win it for the Pride, 11-10.

Springfield will travel to Emerson next Saturday at 4:00 pm.
