Men's Lacrosse Ends Season in NEWMAC Semifinals With 13-8 Setback to MIT

Springfield, Mass. – April 30, 2026 – The second-seeded Springfield College men's lacrosse team saw its 2026 campaign come to a close after a 13-8 setback to third-seeded MIT in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Semifinals on Thursday evening on Stagg Field.

MIT, now 9-7 on the season, will move on to the NEWMAC title game on Saturday at top-seeded and No. 4 ranked Babson College. Springfield sees its season end with a record of 10-6 under head coach Sean Quirk, who completed his first year on Alden Street.

Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) led Springfield with two goals and an assist for three points, while the remainder of the Pride's six goals were tallied by six different student-athletes. Dominic Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) posted six ground balls and won 11 face offs, while Owen Dawson (South Hadley, Mass.) and Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) each caused a turnover.

Nine of MIT's 13 goals came from Riley Pierce and Bryce Metalios as Pierce registered five goals to go along with four ground balls, while Metalios notched four goals, an assist and two ground balls. Garrett Campagna dished out four assists for the Engineers tonight as well.

Both keepers were tested as Joseph Grenier (Cheshire, Conn.) made 15 saves for the Pride, while Collin Lung stopped 13 shots for the Engineers.

Springfield raced out to a 3-0 lead after goals from Savastano, Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) and Berkel over the opening five minutes of play. MIT went on to score 13 of the next 15 goals and posted four goals playing a man-up to forge ahead 13-5 by the time the fourth quarter rolled around.

Dawson cut MIT's offensive power with an unassisted strike before Degnan and Nick Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) tallied goals for the Pride over the final minutes of the contest to account for the 13-8 final.

As a team, MIT held the edge in shots (40-35), ground balls (41-18), face offs (14-10) and scored four times on the man-advantage. The Engineers also went 25-for-31 on the clear, while Springfield went 27-for-33 in transition.
