Softball Falls Into Elimination Bracket After Day One of NEWMAC Tournament With Split With Coast Guard & No. 25 MIT

Springfield, Mass. – May 5, 2026 – The Springfield College softball team split its first two games of the 2026 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Potter Field.

Springfield began the day by defeating seventh-seeded Coast Guard, 1-0, but fell in the nightcap to second-seeded MIT, 10-2, in six innings. Springfield, now 26-13 on the season, will face Wellesley in an elimination game on Friday afternoon. The Pride will need two wins on Friday to continue its season on Saturday.

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Dana Walker as the score stood at 1-0 after seven innings, despite both pitchers allowing a combined 13 hits. Coast Guard was able to get nine hits off of DeRosa, but the senior stranded all nine runners on base to preserve the shutout.

Hayden Reilly went 4-for-4 for the Bears, while all four Springfield hits were recorded by four different student-athletes. Coast Guard stranded the bases loaded in the second and Springfield was able to capitalize by scoring the only run of the game in the bottom of that frame.

Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) reached on an error before back-to-back singles by Madi Testo (Keene, N.H.) and Emilia Santiago (West Hartford, Conn.) loaded the bases. Walker got the first out of the inning, but Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.) roped the ball off of Walker's glove scoring Katsetos for the 1-0 lead.

Coast Guard put at least one runner on in each of the last five innings, but couldn't score against DeRosa who improved to 16-5 in the circle with six strikeouts. Walker took the loss (13-10) for the Bears.

In game two, MIT's offense teed off against Springfield's pitching staff ending the game after six innings due to the eight run rule. The Engineers scored twice in the second, twice in the third and twice in the fourth before Springfield was able to get on the board.

Springfield received singles by Sammy Swords (Plano, Texas) and Taylor Falotico (Windsor, Conn.) before DeRosa drove in the Pride's only two runs of the game. MIT loaded on four in the bottom of the sixth ending the game before the full seven could be played.

Sharona Huang pitched six innings for MIT and allowed just the two unearned runs. Julia Rimshnick (Staten Island, N.Y.) took the loss for the Pride going the first four.

Two of Springfield's six hits came from DeRosa, while Lauren Sundquist nearly hit for the cycle for the visiting Engineers.
