Springfield, Mass. — September 2, 2026 — The Springfield College women's soccer team opened up the season with 2-0 nonconference victory over Western New England on Tuesday evening on Brock-Affleck Field.
The Pride improve to 1-0 overall while the Golden Bears drop to 0-1.
The tandem of Katie McFerran (Selkirk, N.Y.) and Emilee Surber (Deep River, Conn.) led the Pride to the win as each one knocked in a goal.
Mallory Forgatch (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) made three saves during the opening 45 minutes before Mairead Marsden (Amsterdam, N.Y.) added two saves in the second half to preserve the shutout. Ainsley Napolitano recorded five saves in the falling effort.
The Pride controlled the match from the opening whistle, scoring twice in the first half to build an early advantage. Surber opened the scoring in the 25th minute, finding the back of the net to put Springfield ahead, 1-0. Less than 11 minutes later, McFerran doubled the Pride's lead, finishing off an assist from Julia Mateus (Ludlow, Mass.) to make it 2-0.
Springfield's defense held strong throughout the second half, limiting Western New England to just three shots after halftime to secure the 2-0 victory.
The Pride finished the evening with an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Springfield returns to action on Friday, September 4 as they host the University of New England at 4:00 pm on Brock-Affleck Field.
