Football Opens Season With a Win Against Western New England; Pride Earns Seventh Pynchon SAW Game Victory

Springfield, Mass. — September 4, 2026 — Six touchdowns from six different student-athletes led the Springfield College football team to a win over Western New England on Friday night in the 13th annual Pynchon SAW Game, 42-28, on Stagg Field.

The Pride, who won its first SAW Trophy since the 2024 season, starts its season at 1-0 while the Golden Bears begin the slate at 0-1. Springfield now leads 7-6 in all-time meetings of the Pynchon SAW Game.

Springfield entered today's contest receiving votes in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III national poll and the D3football.com national poll.

Stanford Davis (Montague, N.J.) led the Pride rushing 187 yards with a touchdown while Bradley Barcello (Weston, Conn.) rushed for 135 yards with a touchdown. Drew Heenan (Londonderry, N.H.) sprinted for 45 yards for himself with a rushing touchdown while also throwing for 131 yards with two passing touchdowns.

As a team, Springfield produced 449 yards of rushing offense with an average of 7.0 yards per play as four touchdowns came on the ground. Springfield held the ball for 34:38 and were 12-for-16 on third down. Defensively, Nick Gonzalez (Parsippany, N.J.) registered eight total tackles while JT Kinsey (Savannah, Ga.) and Tyler Sordillo (Hull, Mass.) each added six.

Davis and Barcello powered the Pride in the first drive of the game as Davis rushed for 21 yards before Barcello recovered a fumble and ran it into the end zone to give the Pride the early 7-0 lead. After converting one first down, a false start pushed the Golden Bears back and a sack from Justin Smith (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) forced Western New England to punt which set up Springfield on its own 32-yard line. Heenan then connected with Caleb Hantho (Schoharie, N.Y.) on the second play of the drive for 65-yards for another touchdown to lead 14-0.

The Golden Bears responded in the second quarter, scoring early on a three-play drive before Springfield held on to the ball for over seven minutes and added another touchdown. Western New England then went on to score again to put them within one score. Owen Dawson (South Hadley, Mass.) then scored with 40 seconds to go in the third and then after Western New England went three-and-out, Davis rushed for 62 yards to give the Pride the 35-14 lead.

Both teams exchanged touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Bode Dunn (Stockton, N.J.) accounted for the sixth and final touchdown for the Pride as Springfield took the 42-28 win.

Springfield will head to Bangor, Maine to face Husson next Saturday at 12:00 pm.
