WELLESLEY, Mass. – October 18, 2008 – Amanda Young (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) scored the game-winner as the Wellesley College soccer team defeated 17th-ranked Springfield College in a Saturday afternoon NEWMAC contest.
The win improves Wellesley to 8-2-2 overall with a perfect 6-0 mark in NEWMAC play. Springfield falls to 9-3-2 with a 4-1-1 record in the NEWMAC.
Young, a first-year, scored just 1:47 into the game after dribbling from midfield and catching the Pride defense off-guard to net her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Springfield out shot Wellesley 15-3 in the first half with Pride first-year Jackie Moscardelli (Weymouth, Mass.) recording four shots on goal. However, Blue keeper Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.) was brilliant between the posts, tallying seven first half saves. Wellesley also got excellent defense from Erin Simons (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Loretta White (Northampton, Mass.) to thwart several Springfield attacks.
In the second half, Springfield held a 10-4 advantage in shots, but Martore added six more saves and the Wellesley defense held on for the 1-0 upset victory.
Martore recorded 13 saves in goal for the Blue for her third-highest career total. For Springfield, Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) picked up two stops between the posts.
After a red card was issued to Springfield early in the contest, the Pride played with just 10 players for the final 74-plus minutes of the game.
Springfield plays on Tuesday, a 7:00 pm conference game at Coast Guard.
