Springfield, Mass. — October 6, 2009 — Senior Alanna Dick won a hard-fought match at No. 6 singles to give her Smith College women’s tennis team the clinching team point in a 6-3 victory over Springfield College tonight in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match at Springfield’s Appleton Courts. The win gives the Pioneers a 3-2 record, while Springfield falls to 1-5.
Alanna Dick (Winthrop, Maine) give her team the all-important fifth point by defeating SC junior Talya Pessolano (Springfield, Mass.) by a score of 7-5, 6-4. A short time later, sophomore Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill.) gave Smith the final team point by defeating SC freshman Erin Woodbury (Yarmouth, Maine) at No. singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Smith took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Singles winners for Springfield included junior Amy Shaw (Walpole, Mass.) at No. 1, and senior Funmi Olowookere (Woonsocket, R.I.) at No. 4. Scores below.
