Providence, R.I. – October 3, 2010 – Led by the tournament’s most valuable player, Sarah Lang-Rodean, the Springfield College women’s volleyball team won three matches on Saturday as it claimed the 2010 Johnson and Wales Fall Classic.

Springfield has now run its record to 18-2 on the season as it went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend.

In its first match of the day, the Pride bested Western Connecticut State in four sets by the scores of 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17. Springfield then went on to sweep UMass Dartmouth, 25-20, 25-16, 25-13. In the championship match against host Johnson and Wales, the Pride’s offense was unstoppable as it rolled to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 victory.

Lang-Rodean had a standout weekend as she was named the top player in the tournament. In Springfield’s win over WCSU, Lang-Rodean became just the sixth player in program history to record 1,000 kills in their career. Teammate Heather Lively accomplished the feat earlier this season.

The Pride set the tone for the day as it battled to a four-set win over WCSU in its first of three matches. Lang-Rodean totaled 13 kills, including her milestone 1,000th, while teammate Lauren Torvi produced 11 kills out of the middle. Senior setter Kelsea Hellyar was credited with 48 assists in the victory.

Springfield then turned right around and swept UMass Dartmouth behind 11 kills from Lively and 30 assists from Hellyar.

In the championship match, Springfield hit .386 as a team as it handled the hosts. Torvi led the way as she posted 13 kills at a .667 clip, while Hellyar handed out 35 assists to go along with eight digs.
