Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – October 29, 2010 – For the first time in program history, the Springfield College womenÂ's soccer team won the New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) womenÂ's soccer regular season title outright after downing Mount Holyoke, 4-0, on Friday evening.

Springfield, which was previously the NEWMAC regular season co-champion in 2008, has now won seven straight games to improve to 13-4, 8-1 in league play. The victory secures the top seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament for the Pride as it will have a bye for the quarterfinals before hosting championship weekend on November 6-7.

The loss ends Mount HolyokeÂ's season as it finished the 2010 campaign with a 1-14-1, 1-7-1 record.

After controlling much of the play to start the first half, Springfield finally found the back of the net with 16:36 remaining in the opening 45 minutes of play. Jenelle Jahoda sent a cross in from the right side into the middle of the box. Erica Donnelly flicked the ball into the left side of the net as the Pride opened up an early 1-0 lead.

Just 3:36 later, Springfield added to its lead on Brittany Collins first goal of the evening. Amber Thornton touched a ball outside the box to Collins, who snuck a shot from 20 yards out just under the crossbar.

Collins added to her team lead in goals as she netted her ninth goal of the season on an unassisted strike in the 61st minute. Collins lofted a shot over the outstretched arms of Mount Holyoke keeper, Elaine Harvey, as Springfield opened up a 3-0 lead.

SpringfieldÂ's fourth goal came with just over 21 minutes remaining in the contest on a strike by Thornton. Donnelly sent in a perfect cross from the left that found Thornton all alone in the box. The junior striker slotted home the one-on-one bid into the right corner for the final goal the game.

Erin Greenstin and Hanna MacDougall split time in goal as the Pride posted its 11th shutout of the season. Harvey totaled 18 saves in the loss for the Lyons.
