Springfield, Mass. — September 25, 2010 — The Babson College women’s tennis team swept one through four singles action to defeat Springfield College, 6-3, this afternoon at SC’s Appleton Courts in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play. With the win, Babson remains unbeaten at 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the NEWMAC. Springfield is now 1-3 overall, 0-2 in league play.
Springfield took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. But Babson came back strong to win five of the six singles matches, including numbers one through four.
The top singles winners for the Beavers included freshman Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) at No. 1, junior Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) at No. 2, senior Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash.) at No. 3, and sophomore Mikaela Stamos (Northborough, Mass.) at No. 4. The Babson winner at No. 6 singles was junior Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.).
The Pride’s lone singles winner was sophomore Erin Woodbury (Yarmouth, Maine), who won her match, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
SC also won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 winners were sophomore Sam Carney (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Jen Cleary (Nahant, Mass.). The No. 3 winners were sophomores Siana Green (Pomfret, Conn.) and Woodbury.
Springfield next plays on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at Clark.
