Potsdam, N.Y. – October 15, 2011 – Led by Tessa Smolinski, who was named the Most Valuable Player, the Springfield College women’s volleyball team won downed both Elmira and Brockport to win the Clarkson Golden Knight Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride toppled Elmira, 29-31, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18, handling Brockport, 25-17, 25-16, 25-12.
Springfield now stands at 24-1 on the season and has won all five tournaments that it has played in. Smolinski was joined on the All-Tournament team by Meaghan Hart.
In the win over Elmira, Smolinski registered 22 kills at a .313 clip, while Lauren Torvi added 19 kills while hitting .325. Itza Nieves posted 23 digs and Hart totaled 19. Whitney Miller added 32 assists guiding the Pride’s offense.
The entire Springfield team saw game action in the sweep over Brockport, with Torvi’s 19 kills and five blocks leading the way. Smolinski chipped in nine kills and Nieves recorded 10 digs.
The Pride will resume New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday evening when it hosts WPI at 7:00 pm.
