Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. – October 13, 2012 – In a rematch of last year’s conference championship game, the Springfield College women’s soccer team defeated MIT, 1-0, on Saturday in NEWMAC play.

It was the Engineers’ first conference loss this season, dipping their NEWMAC record to 5-1 and their total record to 10-3-1, while the Pride are now 8-4-1 for the season and 5-1 in conference play.

Nicole Fowler scored the lone goal of the game in the 19th minute when she received a cross from Nina Vital and was able to blow past the defenders and shoot the ball into the left side of the net from about five yards away.

MIT fought to catch up, making six shots at net during the first half, but only two of them needed to be saved by keeper Erin Greenstein. Springfield took nine shots at goal in the first 45 minutes and senior goalie Meghan Wright was able to save five of them. MIT’s best chance at a goal was at the 41st minute when junior Michaelann Rodriguez beat the defenders and shot just wide of the net.

Trailing a goal behind Springfield at the start of the second half, the Engineers turned up the intensity, hoping to close the gap. One minute in, junior Samantha Fleischmann lobbed the ball at the net but Greenstein managed to save it. MIT outshot the Pride, 8-4 in the second period, half of which were saved by the goalkeeper. Despite their pressure during the last 45 minutes, the Engineers were not able to find the back of the net this time, giving Springfield a 1-0 victory at the end of the game.
