Springfield, Mass. — October 2, 2012 — The Springfield College women’s tennis team defeated its counterparts from Smith College, 9-0, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match-up this afternoon in the Springfield College Field House. Due to rainy conditions, the match was played indoors.
It is the second consecutive 9-0 victory for the Pride, and its first win of the season in conference play. SC is now 4-2 overall, 1-2 in the NEWMAC. Smith is now 0-3, 0-3.
The Pride started off well by sweeping the doubles. Seniors Sam Carney (Franklin, Mass.) and Siana Green (Pomfret, Conn.) got the ball rolling with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, it was a pair of seniors from Maine who were victorious at 8-1. They were Erin Woodbury from Portland and Amy Buttarazzi from Scarborough.
At No. 2, senior Vanessa Senecal (Seekonk, Mass.) and junior Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn.) put together an 8-5 win.
In singles play, the Pride did not lose a set. After clinching the match by winning the first six matches, SC and Smith played the last two in one set each.
Carney was first off the court at No. 1 singles, defeating junior Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria), 6-0, 6-2.
Woodbury was second off the court, providing the team clincher with her 6-1, 6-1 win over senior Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas (Durham, N.C.).
And Green followed suit with her 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles over junior Haruka Shimoto (Tokyo, Japan).
At No. 4, 5, and 6, it was Streimer, freshman Melanie Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.), and Senecal wrapping it up.
