Beverly, Mass. – March 8, 2012 – Jimmy O’Leary pounded out 11 kills at a .733 clip to lead the visiting Springfield College men’s volleyball team to a three-game sweep of Endicott on Thursday evening. Springfield cruised the to victory 25-15, 25-18, 25-18.
The Pride, which is ranked second in the nation in the latest national polls, improves to 17-5, while the Gulls drop to 9-7.
Led by O’Leary’s masterful performance, Springfield finished the evening hitting .455 as a team. Fellow middle Greg Falcone connected for kills on all six of his swings, while Mike Pelletier added seven kills of his own. Nick Ferry had a match-high eight digs and Keaton Pieper totaled 29 assists and five digs.
Endicott middle Thomas Stoeckinger tallied 11 kills while hitting a .500 hitting percentage and adding two blocks. Jeremy Siden, added nine swings with Matt Devendorf posting four more. Setters Jeremy Schlosser and Carter Roche combined for 27 assists with Schlosser leading the way with 18 assists and six digs.
In each of the first two sets, Endicott stayed with the Pride by trailing by only a couple of points midway through each set. Springfield, however, would rally to gain separation. In the first up 11-9, Springfield scored four in a row take a six-point advantage. In the second with just a 17-15 advantage, the Pride once again rattled off four straight to take control of the match.
In the third set, however, Endicott and Springfield battled back-and-forth with 15 ties and no team holding a lead larger than two points. After a Siden kill gave Endicott an 18-17 lead, Springfield caught fire with eight straight points to end the match.
The Pride will now be off until it hosts the Springfield Invitational on March 23-24. Springfield will play Kean at 5:00 pm before hosting rival Juniata at 7:00 pm.
