New York, N.Y. – November 16, 2013 – The Springfield College women’s basketball team suffered a 72-61 setback to host New York University in the championship game of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday Night in the Coles Sports Center.
Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) netted a team-best 15 points, while Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) continued to produce off the bench with 12 points, nine boards, and three blocks. Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) filled the stat sheet with 10 points, seven assists, and six caroms.
The Pride committed 32 turnovers in the game, which resulted in 22 NYU points.
NYU trailed the Pride multiple times throughout the contest, but kept finding ways to get back into the game, and ultimately jumped out to a late lead the it would never surrender. Leading the Violets to that victory was freshman guard, and Tournament MVP, Kaitlyn Read. The University Park, TX, native poured in a game-high 23 points, none more important than her three-pointer down the stretch, in addition to notching eight steals and four rebounds.
Helping out Read en route to the Violets victory over Springfield were forwards sophomore Megan Dawe and freshman Lindsey Oldshue, both of whom were named to the All-Tournament team. Both Lewis and Bickelhaupt earned All-Tournament team honors for the Pride.
Springfield cut the NYU lead to two, 63-61, after Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) buried a trifecta with 2:19 remaining. However, the hosts scored the final nine points of the game to close out the 11-point victory.
The Pride will return to action on Wednesday night when it hosts Wheaton in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
