Springfield, Mass – November 2, 2013 - The Springfield College women’s soccer team got a late goal in regulation from Nina Vital (Ludlow, Mass.), but battled through two overtime periods to tie visiting Wellesley, 1-1 on Saturday. It was Senior Day at Brock-Affleck Field to close out the regular season.
Brianna Messier (Hopedale, Mass.) got things going for the Pride in the 77th minute, getting the ball at midfield and sending a pass into Vital. The senior gained control and chipped it in over Wellesley goalie Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) into the right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Wellesley tied it up in the 81st minute, on a goal by Abigail Hess (Claremont, Calif.). The sophomore lofted a shot into the left side of the net to force overtime.
Vital almost ended it in the second overtime period, just two minutes in, but her shot went right into the hands of Goldsmith.
Springfield closes the regular season at 11-4-3 and 6-1-3 in the NEWMAC. Wellesley sits at 9-7-4 and 6-1-3 in the conference. The Pride owned a 29-3 advantage in shots for the game.
Goldsmith made a big save late in the first half. With under six minutes to play, she came out and knocked a Springfield shot away to keep the game scoreless.
With 26:49 left in regulation, Ashley Carresi (Billerica, Mass.) had a chance when she sent a hard shot in, but it was saved by Goldsmith. Brooke Hattinger (Weymouth, Mass.) tried just two minutes later, but her attempt was grabbed by Goldsmith, who made a leaping save.
With 23 minutes left to play, Jessica Miller (Southbury, Conn.) sent a nice cross pass into the box for Vital, but before the senior could take a shot, Goldsmith came out to make a save. Two minutes later, Carresi sent a pass to Nicole Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) who gave it to Vital. Vital beat the defender but her shot went just high.
Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made 1 save in goal for Springfield while Goldsmith had 14 for Wellesley.
