Pittsburgh, Pa. – November 30, 2013 – The Springfield College men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 89-82 overtime decision to Hampden-Sydney in the Carnegie Mellon/DoubleTree Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Senior Sean Martin (Rindge, N.H.) led Springfield with 19 points on the day.

Hampden-Sydney entered the game ranked eighth in the country according to this week's D3hoops.com national poll and improved to 3-1. The loss is the first for the Pride this season as it falls to 3-1. Springfield will take on Penn State New Kensington on Sunday at 1:00 pm.

Nick Sienkiewicz (Cranston, R.I.) netted 15 points, and Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) registered his second double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 boards. Alex Garstka (Westfield, Mass.) chipped in 10 points off the bench for the Pride.

Springfield found itself trailing by 12 as the scoreboard read 64-52 with 6:19 left in regulation. However, over the next 3:02, the Pride scored 10 unanswered points, with back-to-back three pointers by Nick McKenna (Danvers, Mass.) and Sienkiewicz cutting the Tigers lead to two.

Hampden-Sydney would extend its lead to three on a jumper with one minute on the clock, only to have Garstka drain a deep triple to tie the game just 12 ticks later. After an empty Tiger possession in which McKenna hauled in the rebound, head coach Charlie Brock called for timeout. Out of the break, Martin finished off the glass after a tough drive along the baseline to give Springfield a two-point cushion with 4.8 seconds left.

The Tigers called timeout, advanced the ball to midcourt, and called another timeout to draw up a final play. Khobi Williamson then sent the game into overtime as he scored off a running hook shot across the lane as time expired.

In the overtime session, Hampden-Sydney scored 11 of the first 15 points, netting three-straight trifectas, to seize control. Springfield got as close as four three different times, but the Tigers held on for the seven-point win.

The Pride battled tough all game and never backed down from the Tigers. After falling behind 16-4 just 6:26 into the game, the Pride stormed back with 12 unanswered points, including five from Sienkiewicz, to tie the contest.

Just 1:35 into the second-half, the Pride went down 40-31, but used another impressive run, this time an 11-1 surge capped off by a Martin runner to take its first lead of the game at 42-41. All told, the score of was tied nine times as the game featured eight lead changes.
