Springfield, Mass. — September 10, 2013 — The Springfield College women’s soccer team earned its second win of the season Tuesday with a 2-0 win over visiting Western New England University.
Springfield (2-1) struck first, scoring just 9:59 into the first half on a goal by Nina Vital (Ludlow, Mass.).
Nicole Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) took a tough shot from the left side, placing it perfectly in front of the goal. Western New England goalie Briana Kubik (Blanford, Mass.) came out to make a save as Springfield’s Kim Rasmussen (East Berlin, Conn.) made a bid to head it in, but Vital came through to tap it in for the early lead.
With 20:25 left in the first half, Fowler gave the Pride a two goal lead. Ashley Carresi (Billerica, Mass.) made a nice pass and Fowler buried it into the right side of the goal, by the dive of Kubik.
Springfield kept the pressure on in the second half as Vital got a good shot off with 17 minutes left in the game. Kubik came up with the save to keep it a 2-0 Springfield lead.
Springfield dominated possession, not allowing at WNE shot on goal for the entire game. The Pride tallied 19 shots in the game to the Golden Bears’ two.
Kubik had eight saves in goal for the Golden Bears. Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) earned the shutout in goal for the Pride.
WNE (3-2) will travel to Gordon on Saturday for a noon start. Springfield will host UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
