Amherst College Tops Women's Soccer, 4-0

Springfield, Mass. – September 18, 2013 – The Springfield College women’s soccer team fell to visiting Amherst College, 4-0 on Wednesday. Amherst climbs to 2-0-1 with the win while Springfield falls to 3-2.

Amherst got on the board in the 19th minute on an unassisted goal by Kate Sisk (Sudbury, Mass.). Springfield was aggressive in the backfield, but Sisk soared a shot over the defense and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Megan Kim (Newport Beach, Calif.) tallied a goal in the 29th minute, giving the Lord Jeffs a two-goal cushion. The sophomore broke past several defenders, and snuck one by the dive of Springfield goalie Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).

Kim had another opportunity with under five minutes left in the first half, but Gillett came out to make a diving save on the forward’s shot.

Springfield made a late bid in the first half when Lauren Muser (Derry, N.H.) rocketed a high shot that forced Amherst goalie Holly Burwick (New Canaan, Conn.) to jump up and push the ball over the crossbar. Amherst led 2-0 at the half.

The Pride came out aggressive in the second half. Six minutes in, Mariah Ferrara (North Adams, Mass.) broke by an Amherst defender and took a hard shot that was just high, skimming over the crossbar. Less than two minutes later, Springfield’s Karly Barrett (Sparta, N.J.) had a chance, firing a shot into the hands of Burwick who made the save.

With 28:43 left in the game, Amherst tacked on an insurance goal. Senior forward Hannah Cooper launched a deep shot into the right side of the net for a 3-0 lead.

With 20:09 left to play, Amherst’s Chloe McKenzie (Upper Marlboro, Md.) took a pass from Sarah Duffy (Fairfield, Conn.) and buried it into the left side of the net to make it a 4-0 game.

Springfield edged Amherst in shots, 11-6 and in corner kicks, 5-0.

Next on the schedule for Springfield is a trip to New London, Conn. on Saturday. The Pride will play NEWMAC rival Coast Guard at 3 p.m. in the first conference game of the season. Amherst is in action again on Saturday, traveling to  Williams for a 2 p.m. start.
