Box Score Worcester, Mass. - October 21, 2014 - Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Hurwitz (Longmeadow, Mass) hit an impressive .625 while posting 10 kills and 12 digs as the Springfield College women's volleyball team defeated WPI in straight sets on Tuesday evening in Harrington Auditorium.
Springfield took the match by set scores of 25-14, 25-10, 25-7.
The Pride, currently tied for third in the latest New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Top 15, ups its record to 17-8 on the season and 7-2 in the New England and Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). WPI slips to 10-16 overall and 1-7 in NEWMAC outings.
Hurwitz was outstanding as the Pride never trailed in the opening set. The sophomore belted six kills without an error in eight attempts hitting .750 and led all players with six digs in the opening frame.
Junior middle blocker Elise Brogan (Andover, Mass.) took center stage in the middle stanza, scoring on all four of her kill attempts. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Andres' (West Barnstable, Mass.) serving keyed a 7-0 Springfield spurt in the final set as the Pride transformed a 1-1 deadlock into a 8-1 advantage that would not slip below six points the rest of the way.
For the match Hurwitz collected 10 kills in 16 tries without committing an error and Brogan finished with a .389 hitting percentage as she ended with nine kills. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Holt (Granby, Conn.) added six kills and sophomore outside hitter Jamie Schneck (Livingston, N.J.) chipped in with four as the Pride hit an outstanding .341 for the match.
Sophomore setter Marnae Mawdsley (Bolton, Conn.) paced all players with 25 assists for the guests while sophomore libero Meghan Kinee (Williamstown, N.J.) and Schneck both amassed seven digs and Brogan added a solo block and three block assists.
Katie Hurlock (Burlington, Mass.) and Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, Mass.) combined for seven kills for WPI while Kelly Rathje (Scituate, Mass.) tallied a team-best seven digs. Caroline Meyer (Easton, Mass.) and Emma Sheils (Shirley, Mass.) split setting duties and doled out eight and six assists respectively. Adrienne Weishaar (Chester, N.H.) contributed a pair of kills to go along with two block assists.
WPI heads to Eastern Connecticut Saturday for a tri-match versus Plymouth State at 2 p.m. and the host Warriors at 4 p.m. Springfield will head to another tournament this weekend for the annual Hall of Fame Tournament hosted by Smith and Amherst.
