Women's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Bout With NYU

Springfield, Mass. - November 22, 2014 - Senior forward Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) posted her second double-double in as many games, registering 11 points and as many rebounds, but the Springfield College women's basketball program suffered a 60-41 loss to New York University in a non-conference bout on Saturday afternoon.

In a game that featured a pair of teams who reached the NCAA Championship Tournament last season, the Pride fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Violets remain unbeaten at 3-0 to kick off the 2014-15 season. Springfield shot 30.8% (16-52) on the day, while NYU was 18-for-49 from the field, shooting 36.7 %.

Bickelhaupt led the way for the hosts in both points and rebounds, while sophomore guard Dina Pitsas (Milford, N.H.) registered nine points and junior forward Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) tallied eight in the loss.

For the Violets, Megan Dawe (Santa Clarita, Calif.) led the way with 12 points and six rebounds, while Kaitlyn Read (University Park, Tex.) pieced together a six point, seven rebound performance for the visitors.

NYU jumped out to an early 7-3 lead over the Pride after Dawe knocked down a lay-up. Battling back into the contest, Andrea Moschetta (Harrison, N.Y.) found Riley Fake (Brockport, N.Y.) open behind the arc for a three-pointer to pull the Pride back to within one midway through the first.

After back-to-back free-throw conversions from Maya Wasowicz (New York, N.Y.) and Dawe, the Violets possessed a 13-8 lead, before another triple from Fake pulled the Pride back to within two.

The Violets regained its five-point cushion following a pair of free-throws from Read, but the Pride jumped back to within three after back-to-back lay-ups from Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) and Gins, ending the half at 25-22.

NYU opened the second half on a 6-2 run to push its lead to 31-24 following a lay-in from Read, but was quickly erased by back-to-back baskets from Bickelhaupt and Gins to bring the Pride back to within three.

Pitsas knocked down a jumper with 13:22 remaining in the contest, however Wasowicz sparked an 11-0 run for the Violets, capped off by a three-pointer from Lindsey Oldshue (Glenview, Ill.), giving NYU a 16-point cushion with 8:38 remaining.

After Bickelhaupt converted a lay-up  to bring the Pride to within 15, NYU went on a 6-0 run over 1:51, capped off by a pair of free-throws by Lexi Bove-Domenech (Queens Village, N.Y.), icing the victory for the Violets.

The Pride will return to action on Tuesday, November 25 when it will travel to Williams College. The game is set for 5 p.m.
