New York, N.Y. – March 13, 2014 – First year Sean Zuvich (San Pedro, Calif.) registered a career-high 16 kills to fuel the Springfield College men’s volleyball team to a three-game sweep of Baruch College on Thursday night. Springfield won by the scores of 25-21, 25-22, 25-9.
The Pride, which improved to 18-7, put on another solid offensive showing as it hit .507 for the evening. After committing 34 attack errors in a five-set win over Baruch on March 1, Springfield has totaled just 21 attack errors in its last four matches combined. The loss sets 14th-ranked Baruch back to 15-6 this year.
Zuvich led the nation’s second-ranked team with 16 kills at a .429 clip and Greg Woods (Middletown, Conn.) recorded nine kills while hitting .533. Keaton Pieper (Dallas, Texas) was credited with 34 assists running the offense, and Nick Ferry (Valencia, Calif.) posted eight digs. Luis Vega (Corozal, Puerto Rico) notched seven kills, five digs, two aces, and two blocks, and Jimmy O’Leary (Reading, Pa.) chipped in six kills and a trio of blocks.
In the opening set, Zuvich set the tone early and often, producing seven kills, while both Pieper and Vega delivered a pair of service aces. After earning a 17-12 advantage, Springfield fought off a 5-1 Baruch run to take the first set, 25-21, thanks to a block from Zuvich and O’Leary.
Springfield broke open a nine-all tie in the second set with a 4-0 burst, using a Zuvich ace to force the Bearcats into a timeout at 13-9. Baruch would get within 22-20, but consecutive Zuvich kills gave Pride set point, and despite two-straight Baruch points, O’Leary pounded a ball in the middle to seal the set.
Tied at three apiece in the third set, Springfield blew open up the game with a 9-0 surge, thanks to Vega producing two kills and two blocks. Hitting .684 in the set, Springfield completed the three-game sweep with a 25-9 win.
The Pride will play again on March 29 in a tri-match at Vassar with the host Brewers and Sacred Heart.
