Box Score 2 Cambridge, Mass. - September 13, 2014 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team split a pair of five-set matches in the second day of the MIT Invitational on Saturday.
Despite winnings the firs two sets, Springfield could not finish off the match as Endicott rallied for a 21-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-19, 15-11 win. In their second match of the day, Springfield put together a gritty, five-set win over Tufts by the scores of 15-25, 25-16, 25-23, 18-25, 15-10.
The Pride entered the weekend receiving votes in the AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll and as the top-ranked team in New England according to the NEWVA Coaches Poll and is now 6-2 on the year.
In the victory over Tufts, outside Jennifer Hurwitz (Longmeadow, Mass.) racked up 14 kills and 13 digs, while Hannah Andres (West Barnstable, Mass.) had the best match of her young career as she totaled 12 kills and nine digs. Kelsey McGayhey (Shelter Island, N.Y.) produced 13 kills, and Whitney Miller (Cuba, N.Y.) directed the Pride attack with 42 assists, 13 digs, four blcoks, and three kills.
Lauren Holt (Granby, Conn.) chipped in nine kills and five blocks, and Meghan Kinee (Williamstown, N.J.) posted a team-best 17 digs.
Earlier in the day, Holt tallied 13 kills in the loss to Endicott, while McGayhey added eight kills. Kinee led the Pride with 15 digs, and Molly Giannattasio (East Lyme, Conn.) registered 10 digs and 11 assists.
The Pride will open up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday when it travels to play Coast Guard.
