Springfield, Mass.- September 20,2014- The Springfield College women's tennis team captured its second-consecutive win on Saturday afternoon after besting Emerson College, 9-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown on Appleton Courts.
The win boosts the Pride's record to 2-3, and marks their first league victory of the season. The Lions move to 0-4 on the season with the loss.
Springfield opened up the afternoon with three victories in doubles action. At No. 1 doubles, Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn.) picked up an 8-1 win. At No. 2 doubles Melanie Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.) and Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) cruised to an 8-0 victory, while Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass) and Stephani Post (Westford, Mass.) capped off an 8-0 win at No. 3.
In sigles play, London posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 by Foster.
Springfield's Thulin took a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 3 and Litchfield delivered a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4. Shemms and Kelsey Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) closed out the action with 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 wins, respectively.
Springfield will pick up with NEWMAC play this Tuesday at Clark University.
