Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak to Five With 59-47 Victory Over MIT

Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. - January 3, 2015 - A balanced scoring attack for the Springfield College women's basketball program helped pace the Pride to a 59-47 victory over conference-foe MIT on Saturday afternoon. Springfield remains unbeaten in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), improving to 3-0 and 7-4 on the year.

The last time the Springfield College women's basketball program had a 3-0 start in conference play was in the 2008-09 season, when the Pride went 16-11 and 10-3 in conference play.

With the loss, MIT falls to 1-2 in conference play, and 5-7 overall. Springfield shot 23-for-54 (42.6%) on the day, while the Engineers were 20-for-53 (37.7%) from the field on the day. Senior forward Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) was the leading point-scorer for the Pride, netting 12 points on the day, while sophomore center Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) contributed with 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

For the Engineers, Osheiza Otori (Metairie, La.) and Sabrina Drammis (Hilton Head, S.C.) both registered 12 points, while Maya Ramachandran (Fremont, Calif.) led the team with seven rebounds.

Down 10-7 in the early goings, senior guard Andrea Moschetta (Harrison, N.Y.) hit a jumper at the 15:51 mark of the opening half to send the Pride on a 10-2 run, capped off by a rebound and put back from Adamopoulos.

After the Engineers cut the deficit to just one after a made lay-up by Liana Ilutzi (East Hanover, N.J.), but a lay-up from Riley Fake (Brockport, N.Y.) followed by a three-pointer from Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) helped Springfield regain its six-point cushion midway through the first half.

Down 24-18 with 5:45 left in the stanza, MIT closed out the first half on an 11-2 run, holding a three-point lead at the break.

Just 2:25 into the second, Moschetta canned a three-pointer to help the Pride regain a two-point lead, which sparked a flurry of traded baskets over the next 5:15, before a jumper from Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) kicked off a 12-4 run for the Pride, including three-straight baskets from Adamopoulos, followed by lay-ups from Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Lewis.

MIT then cut its deficit to six after a rebound and jump shot from Drummis, but back-to-back baskets from Bickelhaupt and Gins gave the Pride a 10-point lead with under a minute to play. Bickelhaupt then cashed in on a pair of free-throws to give the Pride the victory.

Springfield will be back in action on Wednesday, January 7, when it will play host to WPI in another NEWMAC contest. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
