Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 31, 2015 - Three points from senior forward Nicole Fowler (Hudson, Mass.) paced the Springfield College women's soccer program to a 2-0 victory over Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, Springfield closes the regular season with a record of 11-5-2, and a 6-3-1 mark in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the loss, however, Wellesley closes its season with a record of 8-6-3 (3-5-2).
Sophomore goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) finished the contest with one stop on the afternoon, while for the Blue, Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) notched five saves in the loss. The Pride held an 14-4 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, while also holding an 3-1 margin in corner kicks.
Springfield opened the game's scoring just 1:44 into the contest, when Fowler sent in a corner kick that was headed into the back of the net by sophomore Dakota Kelly (Bethany, Conn.) for her third goal of the season to give the Pride an early 1-0 lead over Wellesley.
Fowler extended Springfield's lead to a pair just 12:18 later, when she sent in a flip throw-in that bounced in the box, tipped off the hands of Goldsmith, and found the back of the net to give the Pride a 2-0 first-half lead over the Blue.
Following back-and-forth play in the second half, when Maddie Carlborg (Burbank, Calif.) fired a shot on cage, that was initially saved by Boucher, but Abby Hess (Claremont, Calif.) was on the doorstep and able to tap the loose ball into the back of the net to cut the Blue's deficit in half with 59 seconds remaining.
Up next, Springfield will enter the NEWMAC Championship Tournament, looking for its fourth-consecutive conference title.
