Box Score Springfield, Mass. - November 24, 2015 - The Springfield College women's basketball team dropped a 10-point decision to Williams College in Blake Arena on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Ephs, 57-47.
The Ephs, which were receiving votes in this week's USA Today Coaches National Poll, improve to 3-0 overall, while the Pride even out its record at 2-2 to begin the 2015 season. On the evening, Springfield held a 53-36 advantage on the boards, while the Pride shot 18-for-65 (27.7%), compared to a 20-for-58 (34.5%) shooting effort from Williams.
For Springfield, sophomore forward Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) led the way with 10 points and 14 rebounds while senior forward Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) posted 11 points to go along with 15 boards over 31 minutes of play. Additionally, junior guard Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) posted 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting from behind the arc.
Williams was led by junior point guard Devon Caveney (Andover, Mass.), who tallied 25 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals for the Ephs, while Amanni Fernandez (Queens, N.Y.) and Lexi Jones (Wellesley, Mass.) posted 11 points apiece.
Springfield used a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the game after a pair of free throws by King at the 6:09 mark and extended its least to 14-10 on a Molly McCausland (Millbury, Mass.) mid-range jumper.
The visitors answered with a 10-2 push, capped off by a inside bucket from Fechtelkotter, to force the Pride into a timeout trailing 20-16 with 5:03 left in the opening half.
Springfield responded with eight-straight points over the next 2:53, highlighted by a three in transition from Windwer and a conventional three-point play from Gins to regain a 24-20 cushion. The Ephs closed out the half with the final six points to take a 26-24 lead into halftime, as it turned 11 Springfield turnovers into 14 points.
Williams opened up the third quarter with a strong offensive push, taking afive-point, 31-26 lead over Springfield, before another three-pointer from Windwer and a basket by Danielle Racette (North Adams, Mass.) evened the game at 31 apiece with 6:23 to go in the stanza. Holding a 38-37 lead with 1:45 left in the quarter, Jones nailed a three before she was countered by a buzzer-beating three from Grace Restituyo (Jersey City, N.J.) to bring the Pride back to within one at the break.
The Ephs controlled the beginning of the fourth quarter, as Williams registered the first nine points of the frame to take a 50-40 lead over Springfield, before King ended the run with a baseline jumper. From there, the Ephs were able to hold off a late charge from the Pride, sealing the 57-47 victory on the road.
