Northampton, Mass. - September 29, 2015 - The Springfield College women's tennis program fell to Smith College, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the loss, Springfield falls to 2-4 overall and in the conference, while the Pioneers are now 2-4 on the season, and 1-4 in league play.
After doubles, Springfield had a 2-1 match lead, beneffiting from wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. In the No. 2 doubles match, Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and Rachel Litchfield (Northborough, Mass.) defeated Noa Dubin (Southampton, N.Y.) and Morgan Barney (North Attleboro, Mass.), 8-1, while in No. 3 slot, senior captains Melanie Thulin (Manchester, Vt.) and Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) bested Joanna Kim (Chicago, Illi.) and Janan Fugel (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), 8-1.
Springfield picked up its other two points in No. 4 and No. 5 singles, as Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) was able to defeat Fugel, 6-1, 6-0, before Litchfield prevailed over Barney, 6-1, 6-1.
Up next, Springfield will host Suffolk University in non-conference action on Thursday, October 1 at 4 p.m.
