Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. - January 16, 2015 - Junior center Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) recorded 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds, but the Springfield College women's basketball team fell to MIT, 62-48, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the Rockwell Cage.

With the loss, the Pride drops its second-straight contest, and falls to 9-6 overall on the season, with a 4-3 mark in conference play. The Engineers improve to 11-4, 7-1 with the victory. The Pride shot 20-for-53 (37.7%) from the floor in the loss, while MIT was 22-for-54 (40.7%) on the afternoon, including going 14-for-20 (70%) from behind the arc en route to a win.

Along with a dominant performance in the front court for Adamopoulos, Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) and Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) each recorded seven points, while Gins recorded eight rebounds. The Pride out-rebounded the Engineers, 39-33 in the contest.

For MIT, Sabrina Drammis (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) recorded a team-best 16 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) recorded 11 points, including the first nine points of the game, all three-pointers.

Holinski hit her trio of three-pointers in the opening 2:01 of the game to give the Engineers and early 9-0 lead, a lead that MIT would hold until the Pride climbed back to within six points following a lay-up from Christa Brent (Wilmington, Mass.) with 1:11 left in the first quarter. From there, Liana Ulutzi (East Hanover, N.J.) and Drammis scored back-to-back baskets to give the hosts a 16-6 lead at the end of one.

The Pride would cut its deficit back to eight following a jumper from freshman guard Chelsea McAllister (Springfield, Vt.), but a quick 12-3 run for the Engineers, capped by a triple from Kristen Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.), gave MIT a 32-15 lead with 1:33 remaining in the first half. Windwer would answer with a three of her own, followed by a lay-up from Adamopoulos, but the Pride went into the half-time break down 32-19.

Springfield rattled off seven unanswered points, including five from Adamopoulos, early in the second half to cut its deficit to seven points, but MIT would hold the Pride at seven for the remainder of the quarter, despite the Pride outscoring the Engineers, 14-8, in the stanza.

As dominant as the Pride was in the third quarter, MIT was in the final stanza, as lay-ups from Drammis and Maya Ramachandran (Fremont, Calif.) gave the Engineers a 13-point advantage, a lead that the hosts would maintain for the remainder of the contest, icing the 62-48 win.

Up next, Springfield will continue conference play and head to Clark University on Wednesday, January 20 for a 7 p.m. tip.
