Strong Shooting Leads Women's Basketball Past Emerson, 64-51

Boston, Mass. - January 9, 2016 - The Springfield College women's basketball program posted a season-best 47.1 field-goal percentage and had four player's in double figures for scoring as the Pride defeated Emerson College, 64-51, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday.

With the win, Springfield is now 8-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while Emerson falls to 3-8 on the season, holding a 1-4 mark in the NEWMAC. The Lions were just 20-for-57 (35.1%) from the field, as the Pride hit 24 of 51 field goals in the victory. 

For Springfield, junior guard Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) posted a game-high 13 pionts, while senior captain's Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) registered 11 points apiece. Sophomore forward Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) contributed six points, and hauled in a contest-high 11 rebounds in the win.

For Emerson, sophomore Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) posted 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks for the Lions, while senior Kelsey Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y.) notched 10 points and three boards in the loss.

The Pride got out to a fast start in the game, as it took a 13-2 advantage following a lay-up from King with 3:21 left in the first quarter. The Lions showed their resiliency, as it rattled off the next seven points, including a pair of free-throws from Janissa Delzo (Middlesex, N.J.), and a basket from Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) to cut Emerson's deficit to four with 1:02 remaining in the stanza. From there, junior Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) converted a pair of free-throws of her own to help the Pride to a 15-9 lead at the end of one.

Springfield kept its hot hand in the early stages of the second, as Lewis and Adamopoulos hit on back-to-back jumpers, followed by a triple from freshman Chelsea McAllister (Springfield, Vt.) to help the Pride open a 13-point advantage. Following a good jumper from Gins, Johnson hit a basket of her own to keep the difference at 13, as Springfield went into the locker room with a 30-17 advantage.

Emerson would make it a nine-point game midway through the third quarter when Ducey netted a jumper to make it 38-27, Springfield, before converting a three-point play to cut the Lions' deficit to five with 2:51 left in the stanza. Then, junior Molly McCausland (Millbury, Mass.) hit a jumper to end the run, followed by a free-throw from Christa Brent (Wilmington, Mass.) to give the Pride a 41-33 lead at the end of three.

Windwer would convert her third triple of the contest with 6:48 left in the contest to open a 51-37 lead for the Pride, an edge it would hold on to escape with a 64-51 win over the Lions.

Up next, Springfield will return to Blake Arena on Tuesday, January 12 and will host Babson College in a rematch of last season's NEWMAC Semifinal. The tip is set for 7 p.m.
